Assessment of groundwater vulnerability to pollution using DRASTIC and the SI methods: case of the alluvial aquifer in Tadjenanet-Chelghoum laid (East Algeria)

The region of Chelghoum Laid - Tadjenanet is located in the east Algeria high southern plains Setif, characterized by a highly vulnerable shallow alluvial aquifer. vulnerability groundwater to pollutants relative concept, not measurable or dimensional. nature, quality, and reliability used data have major impact on correctness its assessment. Its classification usually based estimation many more less essential factors, such as characteristics soil unsaturated zone, saturated recharge , topography hydraulic conductivity. aquifer pollution was investigated using two intrinsic methods: DRASTIC susceptibility index (SI). SI method an adaptation specifically design for nitrate-based pollution. parameters input are, among others, depth groundwater, type, topographic slope recharge. validity methods assessing nitrates established comparing distribution these elements with various classes. GIS techniques were implement methods. Vulnerability maps created method’s depict potential penetrate spread locations depending terrain encountered surface comparison revealed that technique most accurate studied establishment map highlighted area great center plain, reflected fragility water. While average areas are center, at periphery Wadi Rhumel, rest field slightly vulnerable. contamination risk this study valuable tools environmental planning can be predictive management resources. This case suggests approach may applicable other part efforts target efforts.
